7 Ways to Limit Social Media Use
These days, almost everyone I know has a social media page. It frequently gives the impression of being a gathering place for friends and information sharing. Social media may be a terrific tool for marketing and information sharing if you run a small business. Social networking does, however, have certain drawbacks.
On websites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, it’s simple to waste a lot of time on useless activities. Social media scrolling can become addictive, but it eats up valuable daytime hours. People spend an average of two hours and twenty-four minutes every day on Facebook, forty minutes on YouTube, thirty minutes on Snapchat, and twenty-eight minutes on Instagram, according to Techjury.
It’s vital to keep in mind that this time was probably not all consecutive, which indicates that most people were probably distracted by social media during the day. Here are a few strategies to help you limit your social media use if you want to accomplish more while spending less time online.
Utilize the Alarm on Your Phone
Using the alarm on your phone is one of the simplest ways to restrict your use of social media. Every time you use social media, set a timer or alarm to sound a few minutes later. If you usually spend 30 minutes scrolling on Facebook each morning, try to limit this by setting your alarm to 10 or 15 minutes.
Set your alarm for 10 or 15 minutes if you typically spend 30 minutes per morning scrolling through Facebook.
You might also want to think about adopting a different method of waking up then the alarm on your phone. The majority of us utilize our cell phone alarms to assist us to get out of bed every morning. The main drawback of doing this is that, once you’re in bed, it encourages you to simply scroll through social media.
Instead, get an alarm clock and put your phone in another room. That way, you can at least get off the bed without getting tempted to go on social media.
Delete Your Apps
Of course, deleting your social networking apps would be a simple option. Starting with one or two applications and working your way up to removing all social media from your phone may be simpler for some people than others.
I don’t currently have Twitter or Pinterest installed on my phone. I’ve previously removed the Facebook and Messenger apps, and it was quite beneficial. My time spent on social media is greatly reduced when it’s not available on my phone.
If you think it would be difficult for you to go turkey, consider committing to doing so for a day or a week. Examine your feelings and decide what you can accomplish with extra time restored to your calendar. This might encourage you to keep going and establish a new routine without abusing social media.
Set Your Phone In Another Room
You might not be able to remove all of your social media apps at once. Perhaps you should use social media to market and post.
Or maybe you belong to a few excellent Facebook groups where you’d like to continue participating.
Social media usage can still be restricted without being entirely eliminated. Do you frequently bring your phone with you wherever you go, even to work? To lessen social media distractions when you’re trying to be productive, think about leaving your phone in a different room.
I can see when I receive calls or texts even when I can’t react because my phone and FitBit are connected. I might get up and get my phone if I see a message or incoming call that is critical. If not, I hang up and return the call or message later. I’m less inclined to waste time on social media if I spend less time with my phone in my hand.
There’s an App/Website For That
Use an app or website that blocks access to social media during specific hours of the day to reduce your usage. An innovative app called Forest can offer visual inspiration to help users stay focused and productive both at work and at home. Make a “blacklist” of the websites and apps you wish to stay away from at particular times of the day. It creates a tree in the app each time you maintain your attention on the current work. Your tree expands over time as you gain virtual currency.

When you spend the virtual coins earned in Forest on planting real trees, the Forest team donates to their partner organization to actually execute this in various areas. Forest also has a Chrome extension that you can use on your laptop or desktop.
Develop Hobbies That Don’t Involve Screen Time
You can restrict your use of social media by cutting down on overall screen time. Since many of us use computers for at least 8 hours a day to work, I am aware that this can be challenging. When you’re not working, you can begin by engaging in more hobbies and activities that don’t entail using a screen.
Take a walk or do something outdoors rather than watching television. Play an instrument, clean up your area, exercise at home, or make something with your hands. Even if you simply engage in your pastime for 15 to 20 minutes a day, it will still teach your subconscious to take periodic breaks from screens.
Have a Phone-Free Dinner Each Night
I completely see why some families have a “no phone zone” policy at the dinner table. A wonderful opportunity to unwind and rekindle relationships with loved ones is during dinner. During this time, your phone and social media can be quite distracting and can even reinforce unhealthy habits that you already have.
Overall, limiting social media use will be more effective if you can learn to put your phone down, stop using displays, and focus entirely on the present.
Change Your Phone Layout
You can make this modification with ease. Change the arrangement of your phone so that more of your utility apps appear first on the home screen if you’re not quite ready to uninstall some of your social media apps. By doing this, you’re teaching your brain to prioritize the more useful apps first and even determine if you really need to open them at all.
Recognize that just as it takes time to include social media use in your calendar, limiting it will also take time and effort. You may start shifting to a more productive schedule and freeing up more time with these suggestions and actions.
